Do-It-Yourself Building Tips and Remodeling Decisions - The Other Side of Do-It-Yourself

Synopsis: Extensive knowledge and experience go into any project and some of us pick up things easy from books and tapes. To make a project look professional, one has to honestly evaluate their skill level.

Many homeowners save money by doing the project themselves. However, you must honestly assess your skill level for the job you are going to attempt. An inferior job will hurt you when it comes time to sell your home. A buyer's first impression when they see a few things not right is “ I don't want to go any further into the house.” They won’t buy the house if they see bad spackling, tile joints out of place, molding joints looking shabby and other amateurish touches.

It looks so easy when you see it done on TV shows like Home Improvement and other home makeover shows. You’ve have to remember that the do-it-yourself homeowners and TV crew helpers have decent professional guidance to insure a successful outcome. You don’t see all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on.

You have to do a professional job on any project or repair. Eventually you are going to sell the house. House shoppers are easily turned off by badly executed projects and the listing price will drop sharply to compensate for inferior deficiencies.

So, before you begin a project, here is a checklist to ponder:

Can I afford a professional?
Do I have the skills to do the job right the first time?
Do I have the time to learn the skills from video or book or to do the work? Am I teachable?
Can I commit to performing the work to a professional’s exacting standards? Will it look as if an amateur did it or a pro?
Do I have the right tools? Will I get all the right tools?

As one repeatedly tackles home improvement project, one gets better. As with anything in life, practice makes perfect. Even hiring an expert to give you pointers and supervise you along the way can save you time, money and get that pro look you want.

There are a lot of guy who know what they're doing who would love to be hired as a part-time coach instead of having to "work for a living."
